The site had four enormous statues, each tall and majestic—so tall that they seemed almost alive. To my surprise, these statues were able to walk as if they were ancient guardians awakened from stone.
The place lay somewhere between Iran and Iraq, but because a war was happening in that region, no one was allowed to visit the site. I could only watch it from a distance, aware of its power and mystery, but unable to approach.
